Vancouver – Join Rungh at DOXA for three screenings on May 9 and May 10, as we explore Longing and Belonging: 1990s South Asian Film and Video. An exciting period in Canadian cultural production is explored in three separate programs: Dispora (short films by Ian Rashid and Leila Sujir); Desire (short films by Shani Mootoo, Ian Rashid, Kaspar Saxena, and Michelle Mohabeer); and Shooting Indians: A Journey with Jeffrey Thomas (a feature length documentary featuring Ali Kazimi and Jeffrey Thomas – both WINNERS of the 2019 Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts).

DOXA Director of Programming Selina Crammond notes: "I'm very excited to partner with Zool Suleman, and Rungh for one of our special programs this year. The films in Longing and Belonging are essential works of film and video that provide a lens to explore the critical issues of our day. By revisiting these works, many which blur the line of narrative and nonfiction, we are calling attention to a rich movement of media art in the 1990s that, through the lens of intersectionality, challenged preconceived notions of nationalism, race and gender as well as queerness and sexual identity. Ultimately they remind us that documentary film is not only a important tool for representation, but it can also be an artistic means in itself that encourages a multitude of experiences and perspectives."

"Creative work by communities and artists of colour continues to be erased and marginalized", states Zool Suleman, Guest Curator of Longing and Belonging, "it is vital that we revisit these films and videos because what they have to say is so relevant for current conversations about race, migration and belonging". Longing and Belonging is a part of Rungh's archive/creation mandate.

Thank you to the City of Vancouver, Creative City Strategy for funding this project.
