Larissa Lai

Larissa Lai has authored two previous poetry books, Sybil Unrest (with Rita Wong) and Automaton Biographies (shortlisted for the Dorothy Livesay Prize), and the chapbook Eggs in the Basement (shortlisted for the bpNichol Chapbook Award). Winner of the Jim Duggins Outstanding Mid-Career Novelists’ Prize, she is also the author of three novels. The most recent, The Tiger Flu, won a Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Fiction, was named an Otherwise Honor Book, and was shortlisted for the City of Calgary W.O. Mitchell Award. Her second novel, Salt Fish Girl, was also an Otherwise Honor Book and was shortlisted for the Sunburst Award and the City of Calgary W.O. Mitchell Award. It has been written about, taught, and celebrated nationally and internationally. Her first novel, When Fox Is a Thousand, was awarded an Astraea Foundation Emerging Writers’ Award and shortlisted for the Books in Canada First Novel Award. She has also written a book of literary criticism: Slanting I, Imagining We: Asian Canadian Literary Production in the 1980s and 1990s, which was shortlisted for the ACQL Gabrielle Roy Prize in Literary Criticism. She holds a Canada Research Chair in Creative Writing at the University of Calgary, where she directs the Insurgent Architects’ House for Creative Writing. A committed community organizer, teacher, and mentor, she has been involved in Vancouver and Calgary writing communities for decades. She has given talks and readings all over the world, from Berlin, Germany, to Wollongong, Australia, to Shanghai, China, to the Watson Lake Community Library in the Yukon.
